Information to educate a child on the difference between graffiti vandalism and urban art. Graffiti is illegal and causes damage and removal costs to the victim whilst Urban art is legal artwork installed on surfaces where permission has been granted by the property owner.
In addition to significant clean-up and removal costs, graffiti vandalism also impacts on communities in other significant ways by damaging civic pride, encouraging further criminal activity, devaluating property, intimidating residents and generating fear and anger.
Advice for the community on graffiti and the law
Phased operations conducted throughout the metropolitan and regional police districts targeting graffiti vandalism have been in place since February 2011.
The Juvenile Clean-up Program aims to provide an alternative restorative service for Juvenile Justice Teams (JJTs) when dealing with young persons who are first time or low level graffiti offenders.
